Ooops, the Jacintos, the Rufinos, the Tantocos, the Moratos…

Would those sparring partners – Teyet Pascual and Ado Escudero fall in this category?

How about the jewelers – Oledan? Dayrit? Velayo? now Lhuillier?

the pawnbroker families: the Tambuntings, the Lhuilliers, the Ablazas

how about the solo entrepreneurs who made it big during the 2 decades of Marcos rule (or let’s call a spade a spade — the “cronies”)? Benedicto, Cuenca, Disini, Floriendo, Ilusorio, Poblador

The Palancas still own, among various holdings, a substantial share of the FEU Far Eastern University, which has experienced a renaissance during the last 20 years under the exceptionally committed leadership of Dr. Lourdes Reyes-Montinola, the only daughter of Dr. Nicanor Reyes, the founder of the university.

Carlos “Charlie” Palanca (La Tondena, etc.), I believe, was a self-made man… but I think he had no male heirs, thus you don’t hear much about the family these days.
