To corroborate Enrique Bustos, I’ve seen a colored reproduction of Manansala’s “Homage to Pieter de Hooch’s Interior of a Dutch House” in a large format art book published by Amon Trading of the Montinolas back in the early 80s. The book also showcased Aurelio M.’s vast collection of masters including various Amorsolos, Legaspis, Hos, Zobels and Luzes. The Manansala work in question is by far the airiest and lightest of his larger works, primarily undertoned in white, and quite distinct from his darker canvasses. It’s a tragedy that the copy of the book authored by Benesa was forever lost to the ravages of Typhoon Ketsana in 2009. I hope the actual painting was insured or fared far better.

A new auction house in Manila recently set a world record for the most expensive drawing by a Filipino artist when a 1972 pen-and-ink by Manansala, Pila sa Bigas, fetched P686,312 at a September 25 2010 sale in a function room of the Mandarin Oriental Manila. This exceeded a previous sale at Christie’s. For more info, click here: http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/home/life/2674-when-art-saves-dance

According to Jaime C. Laya, Lourdes R. Montinola owns a great Vicente Manansala painting titled “Homage to Pieter de Hooch’s Interior of a Dutch House.” Author Leonidas Benesa describes the painting as one of the most beautiful [ oil paintings ] ever painted by Vicente Manansala.

My favorite Manansala would have to be the Madonna of the Slums.
