the last of the panday garing: among the last masters of the old school was graciano nepumuceno who was born in binondo, manila. he first took up painting under miguel zaragoza (1849-1923) but shifted his course to sculpture under ciriaco arevalo and eugenio llerena. at about the turn of the century, he worked with the elder bnonifacio arevalo; he eventually opened his own studio at calle evangelista, santa cruz. although he is best known for genre pieces, nepumuceno also produced “some very fine ivory pieces.” – images of faith:religious ivory carvings from the philippines by regalado trota jose, pacific asia museum, 1990.

he was noted for a set of 8 figurines depicting filipino lifestyles. the melange brightly colored multifigured pieces depicts traditional customs such as pig roasting, weaving, cockfighting, marketing, etc. – the filipino nation: philippine art & literature, grolier international, 1982.

According to the Book of Jaime Laya Consuming Passions Puring Aquino decided to part with her collection beginning in the late 1970’s Jimmy Laya bought some paintings from Puring Aquino for the Central Bank of the Philippines Toribio Herrera’s Long Legged Beauty Caught in a Down Pour Catalino Rivera’s Vejez y Juventud and small paintings including some that she had bought from Don Alfonso Ongpin

Rafael Aquino & Puring Aquino’s house in Mariposa was replaced with Townhouses The size of the lot of their residence was 5 blocks along Mariposa Street. It had a tennis court, a mini-golf course and the house was palatial it even had an elevator Do you still remember the shooting to death of socialite Rose Cacho Castillejos in Forbes Park Well, the suspect Rafael Jr who was wooing Castillejos at that time and probably was spurned. A body was found in Agusan later, and was identified as that of Rafael Jr Incidentally, Rafael Aquino’s wife, Puring Naldo, was Edith Naldo-Ricketts sister, the mother of actor Ronnie Ricketts The houses of Deputy Minister Jolly Benitez and Amy Benitez-Romualdez later Austria in Mariposa was also turned into Townhouses I hope the remaining Ancestral House in the area the Mira Nila Mansion of Sen Helena Benitez will be preserve by her heirs

I came across that very same “Ultima Cena” at a favorite antique dealer’s. It was not big but on close inspection, very beautiful. And it was signed and dated by the artist. The dealer offered it to me for a reasonable price but since I do not like “Last Suppers” because of “feng shui,” I declined. On hindsight, I should have gotten it because it was carved by Graciano Nepomuceno.

In the Villa “El Refugio,” Mariposa St. Q.C. of Mrs. Puring Aquino, for her large dining room she commissioned Graciano Nepomuceno to sculpt the “Ultima Cena” on wood.

It was more than a meter long with the complete cast of characters by the table.

The dining table by S. Baluyut was good for 24 persons.

The sala was full of European antique furnitures she bought from Mr. Fa of St. Peter’s Gallery.

Her private chapel had life size antique wooden santos and altar. The ashes of her beloved son was there.

Among her collection of paintings what I remember most was the still life painting by Claudio Bravo.

In the early 90’s I heard the Villa was sold together with the various collections.
Kit Roxas, a niece of Mrs. Puring Aquino handeled some of the precious items.
