What happened???

There was a time when to be a Spanish mestizo Filipino was to be the height of everything:  The height of wealth, elegance, education, manners, lineage, and good looks…

What happened???!!!

In my best recollection, something happened in the 1980s…  slowly but surely, the Chinese mestizo Filipino became the height of everything:  the height of wealth, elegance, education, manners, lineage [ from Fujian, China ], and yes, even good looks.

The world does go round…   😛   😛   😛

You do know Tito Noli right? When he was still living in Philadelphia, he had a “live-in” American governess to take charge of his children. I remember one time, she was a visitor in Apalit – a vacation I believe.

Adding on to what Ipe N. said…

The Soriano children — Eduardo, Carlos, et. al. — had an English nanny attend to them.

The Vazquez-Madrigal children — Marivic, Miguel, Bela, and Bea — had Chinese “amahs” attend to them.

I know of a Pinoy family in Forbes Park whose children grew up with a Spanish-Filipina mestiza spinster as their governess.

Well, I am a pure Chinese and I always say, the world can still go around in a generation or two. The second and third generation Chinoys are not exactly as hardworking as the the first generation Chinese who created the wealth. For all you know, the next wave will be the natives, right?

    Hi Toto,
I can only agree. Mom used to say that back then, if you wanted to hire a good, efficient and reliable housekeeper, you could get a Chinese amah! They were the best yayas then. Rich families would hire them because of their great skills.
Now, it’s the other way around… it’s the Chinese mestizos who hire Pinoy househelp. Yup, the world does go around.
And this is one funny comment my younger brother told me about the Spanish mestizos of his generation. Nowadays, those “tisoys” cannot anymore brag like they used to because “naka apartment na lang sila ngayon sa San Juan,” while the Chinoys they used to bully before are now living in Greenhills mansions! So true….
