The Return from the Chateau d’If

In the best tradition of Alexandre Dumas pere…

Edmond Dantes has returned.  As Himself, as the Count of Monte Cristo, as Lord Wilmore, as Sinbad the Sailor, as Abbe Busoni…

It is Time for Revenge.

Just from the USD $ 45 million sale of the telecommunications company to the conglomerate — a sale which his daughter and son resented — the monthly yield is conservatively estimated at Php 250 million.  That’s Php 8.33 million a day.  There’s plenty to spend…

And that was only the runt of the litter as far as His Assets are concerned…

The Problem, in the Philippine version, is that one no longer knows who Edmond Dantes is, or Mercedes Herrera, or Baron Danglars, Gaspard Caderousse, Fernand Mondego, Gerard de Villefort, Noirtier de Villefort, Abbe Faria, Baron Franz d’Epinay, Albert de Morcerf, Haydee, Ali Pasha, Valentine de Villefort, Maximilien Morrel, Heloise de Villefort, Edouard de Villefort, Baroness Hermine [ de Nargonne ] de Danglars, Eugenie Danglars, Bertuccio, Benedetto [ later the Count Andrea Cavalcanti ], Jacapo, or Luigi Vampa.  In the Philippine true-to-life version of Alexandre Dumas pere’s story, the protagonists take on the worst traits of the antagonists and vice-versa…

Be Afraid.  Be Very Afraid.

The supposed USD $ 800 million transaction was of his Miami-based company, Futur* Tech International, and just before his legal troubles crested.

I, too was so surprised that said company, at the time of its sale, was supposedly grossing USD $ 250 million in business each year. From what I could make of it, it was primarily a procurement company based in the US to buy computer US-available computers and peripherals for a lot of South American contracts. Since the Count was well-versed in ‘grifting,’ the South American market was a perfect fit. They had each other’s numbers.

That’s really new. I haven’t heard of that yet. That’s a really big company if it sold for USD $ 800 million.

What I spoke of was a smaller telecommunications company, founded by His Daughter, which was sold in September 2004 for USD $ 45 million to the Indonesian conglomerate of So*dono S*lim a.k.a. Li*m Sio* L*ong through the popular telephone company.

Although “small” by their standards, I cited it as an example because it was the only public transaction of The Family which gave a concrete idea of their Immense Fortune.

I tried to posting something here earlier but it didn’t take.

I think the “Count” netted at least 4x that $50 mil figure. The sale was publicized at $800 million.

Take out: 1. 25% capital gains tax ($200 mil est.); 2. kickback to the other parties ($40 mil); 3. brokers’ commission (9.5% – $75 mil); 4. servicing debt load ($250 mil). So; net so far of $235 mil.

Legal fees for the other probem – est. $20 mil. So he would still have a $215 mil net — which is why purchasing the Forbes house for PhP250 mil was small change.

So with a little over $200 mil left, that’s enough to set up a Foundation, which I believe he did. Of course, he can now bankroll his own candidates as well. I just hope most of that money is put to good use — and goes to the needy.

Or am I being too naive?

Will there be an Iron Masque chapter?

Ya know — OK, I’m going to name-drop here — but when we went to Fouquet’s chateau this June (at Vaux-le-Vicomte — I think that’s how it’s spelled), there was a mannequin with an ‘iron’ mask in a corner of the basement — and the whole story/legend behind it. (Of course, it has a lot of kinky overtones, too…. Maybe that should be the Theme of next year’s Bal d’*blaza — and maybe I’ll attend.)

So, M. Raconteur, kindly keep up abreast of the latest episodes of the returning ‘Comte.’

(Aussi, by the way, it appears that Sofia Coppola’s film-bio of Marie Antoinette was a bust — so to speak. I think it made it only in the Best Costume Design category in this year’s Oscar race.) Replied to your p.e. (poste-electronique).
